Privacy Policy
Effective: 11 October 2026. The German version is authoritative.
Summary
Recall keeps your file history on your Mac. It never reads file contents, has no account, analytics or crash reporting, and only goes online to check for updates (if you allow it) and to activate or deactivate a Pro license.

Data on your Mac
For files in the folders you choose to watch, Recall stores the file name, path, the time it was opened or modified, Spotlight metadata such as file type, and a guess of the app used. It uses macOS file system events and Spotlight metadata; it does not read file contents. File previews (Quick Look) are rendered by macOS only when you ask for them.
This history is stored only in ~/Library/Application Support/Recall on your Mac. It is never sent to us or anyone else. You can pause remembering, exclude folders, set how long history is kept, and delete single entries or all history in the app. Uninstalling Recall and deleting that folder removes it completely.
If you activate Pro, the license key and activation details are stored in your Mac’s keychain.
Update checks
Recall uses the open-source Sparkle framework for updates. On the second launch it asks whether to check automatically; you can change this in Settings or check manually at any time. When it checks or downloads an update, your Mac connects to recall.tim-neumann.dev. This transmits your IP address, the app version and a user agent (app and Sparkle version). Sparkle’s optional system profiling is turned off.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest in delivering secure updates). These requests are recorded in our server's log files as described in “This website” below and are deleted automatically after 14 days.
Pro license activation
When you enter a license key, Recall sends to Polar (api.polar.sh) once: the license key, a device label such as “Mac (Mac16,7)” (the hardware model, not a serial number) and the app version. Your IP address is visible to Polar as part of the connection. The same applies when you deactivate the license on a Mac. After activation, Recall works offline and does not check the license again.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of the license contract, including the limit of 3 Macs). We can see activated devices and their labels in Polar’s dashboard. Provider: Polar Software, Inc., 3500 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901, USA. Polar processes this data in the USA. The transfer is safeguarded by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (Commission Decision (EU) 2021/914, Art. 46(2)(c) GDPR), which are part of Polar’s Data Processing Addendum.
Purchase
Pro is sold by Polar as merchant of record. Polar processes your name, email address, billing and payment data to handle the purchase, taxes and invoices, under its own responsibility and privacy policy. We receive order details from Polar (such as your email address, country and the license key) to provide support.
This website
This website is a static site. It runs on a virtual server that we operate ourselves; the server hardware is rented from Pein GbR. When you visit the site, download Recall or Recall checks for updates, the server logs your IP address, date and time, the requested file, the referrer and the browser or app user agent. This is necessary to deliver the site and updates and to keep the server secure (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The log files are rotated daily and deleted automatically after 14 days; we only look at them to fix errors or defend against attacks. This site uses no cookies, no tracking, no local storage, no analytics and no third-party content; it only loads small scripts of its own (for the navigation, the scroll effects and the animation on the home page), which run only in your browser and neither store nor send anything. Therefore no cookie consent under § 165(3) of the Austrian Telecommunications Act 2021 (TKG 2021) is required.
Your rights
You have the right to access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). Contact us at hello@tim-neumann.dev. Data stored only on your Mac is under your control; we have no access to it.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR), in particular in the EU member state where you live. The authority responsible for us is the Austrian Data Protection Authority (Österreichische Datenschutzbehörde), Barichgasse 40–42, 1030 Vienna, Austria, www.dsb.gv.at (complaint under § 24 of the Austrian Data Protection Act, DSG).
Legal framework
We process personal data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Austrian Data Protection Act (Datenschutzgesetz, DSG).
Changes
We update this policy when Recall or our providers change. The current version is always on this page.
