Your data

What does Recall store?

For files in the folders you watch, Recall stores the file name, its path, the time it was opened or changed, Spotlight metadata such as the file type, and a best guess of the app you used.

It never reads or stores what is inside your files. Quick Look previews are shown by macOS only when you ask for one.

Why does Recall ask for access to my folders?

macOS protects folders like Desktop, Documents and Downloads. Without your permission, Recall can't see when files in them are opened or changed. macOS asks once for each watched folder when you start remembering.

If you declined, allow access in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Files & Folders. You can also remove the folder from Settings › Watched Folders instead.

Does Recall go online?

Only for two things: to check for updates (if you allow it) and to activate or deactivate a Pro license with our sales partner Polar. Remembering and searching never need the internet.

There is no account, no analytics and no crash reporting. Your history is never uploaded. Details are in the privacy policy.

Where is my history stored, and how do I delete it?

Only on your Mac, in ~/Library/Application Support/Recall.

To delete it, open Settings › Privacy and choose Delete Last Hour…, Delete Today… or Delete All History…. To remove single files, select them in the Recall window and choose Remove from History…. Your files themselves are never touched.

To remove everything at once, quit Recall and delete that folder.

Finding files

A file I worked on doesn't show up. Why?

Check these in order:

  • Is it in a watched folder? Recall only remembers files in the folders listed under Settings › Watched Folders (Desktop, Documents and Downloads by default).
  • Is the folder excluded? Files in Settings › Excluded Folders are never remembered.
  • Was Recall paused or not running? Nothing is remembered while you pause it. Turn on Launch at login in Settings so Recall is always running.
  • Is it older than 7 days? Recall Free keeps the last 7 days. With Pro, you choose how long history is kept.
  • Is it a hidden or temporary file? Hidden files, temporary files and developer build folders (such as node_modules, build or DerivedData) are ignored.
  • Does Recall have access? If macOS access to a folder was declined, Recall shows a warning in Settings and in the Recall window.
Quick Search doesn't open with ⌥ Space.

Another app may already use that shortcut. Open Settings › Quick Search: Recall shows a warning there if it couldn't register the shortcut. Record a different one, or use Quick Search in the menu bar.

Licenses & purchases

My license key can't be activated.
  • Activation needs the internet once. If Recall says it couldn't reach Polar, check your connection and try again. After activation, Recall works offline.
  • A license works on up to 3 Macs at a time. If all three are in use, choose Deactivate on This Mac… in Settings on a Mac you no longer use.
  • Lost access to an old Mac? You can manage your activations in Polar's customer portal.

Still not working? Email us the error message and the email address you used for the purchase.

How do I move Pro to a new Mac?

On the old Mac, choose Deactivate on This Mac… in Settings › Recall Pro. Then enter your license key on the new Mac with Enter License Key….

How do I get an invoice or a refund?

Recall Pro is sold by Polar, our reseller and the merchant of record. Polar handles payment, invoices, taxes and refunds under its own terms. Your receipt email from Polar has the details. If you get stuck, write to us and we'll help.

Uninstalling

How do I uninstall Recall?
  1. If you use Pro, choose Deactivate on This Mac… in Settings first. This frees the activation for another Mac.
  2. Choose Quit Recall in the menu bar.
  3. Drag Recall from your Applications folder to the Trash.
  4. To remove your history too, delete ~/Library/Application Support/Recall.

Still need help?

Write to us with your question, bug report or idea. We'll get back to you as soon as we can.

For bugs, it helps to mention your macOS version and the Recall version (Recall › About Recall).
